Oh dear, what a week!
After realising I’m yet again a bit behind with stuff on the plot I got really serious last Sunday. I had planned a whole afternoon on the veg plot and so the pressure was on to get things done.
I managed to dig in the rest of the green manure and what a chore it was! Can someone please remind me that it’s serious backbreaking work just in case I start thinking about sowing more of that “good stuff” please?
I’ve also put my onion sets in after having carried them back and forth to the plot a number of times. As always, there were far too many in the packs I had bought so I put the rest in a pot at very close spacings to get some yummy spring onions. Nothing should go to waste.
The plot looked a bit bare so I couldn’t help but to do a bit of direct sowing as well. It feels good to get started… But of course it was only the tough stuff including radishes, turnips and early spinach.
Off home I went when I felt a bit of a scratch on my hand. “Bloody brambles” I thought before remembering that I hadn’t done any work on my prickly friends. After washing dirt and blood from my hand it was clear that something else had had a go at my hand. I had been bitten by a snake! See for yourself
It’s completely crazy. I grew up in a very rural area with only 20 houses in our village and yet I’m bitten by a snake in London, the largest city in Europe. I’m just glad it wasn’t an adder; the UK’s only venomous snake. I’m still gobsmacked.
Anyway, the week ends on a high note for me as I’m sitting here on the dinning table looking out into the garden. Mrs Robin is busy building her nest in one of the nest boxes I’ve got in my garden. It’s only taken 5 years to get some residents…
I have to be careful not to disturb her too much with my curiosity as they easily abandon the nest if they think it’s been discovered. She should lay 2-3 eggs and the incubation period is about 12-15 days. Fingers crossed that we will soon have a couple of cute fletchlings in the C_Veggie garden.

So it really was a snake-bite then? This must be pretty unusual in Britain. I hope your Robins do settle in – that would be really nice. I think I may have a pair of Bluetits nesting in the nesting-box I recently constructed. Certainly they are going in and out a lot.
